A landscape of agave fields on the slope of a volcano. It began as an image generated with artificial intelligence, was drawn by a robot built by the artist, and had its sky painted by hand in oil. Here, an algorithm takes it apart: the pixels scatter, the volcano and the rows of agave dissolve into grain, and the sky runs down the image.
Un paysage de champs d’agaves sur les pentes d’un volcan. Il est né d’une image générée par intelligence artificielle, a été dessiné par un robot construit par l’artiste, puis son ciel a été peint à la main, à l’huile. Ici, un algorithme le défait : les pixels se dispersent, le volcan et les rangées d’agaves se dissolvent en grain, et le ciel coule le long de l’image.
Agave is one of the oldest cultural plants of Mexico, but these fields are a monoculture: a territory reorganised by the logic of production, as regular as a grid of pixels. The work shows a landscape transformed twice — first by agriculture, then by computation.
L’agave est l’une des plus anciennes plantes culturelles du Mexique, mais ces champs sont une monoculture : un territoire réorganisé par la logique de la production, aussi régulier qu’une grille de pixels. L’œuvre montre un paysage transformé deux fois — d’abord par l’agriculture, puis par le calcul.
